Topic: The Holy Spirit speaks
Text: Acts 13:1-3
From the above passage, we see clearly that the Holy Spirit spoke to the early Church. He directed them concerning what to do and who to send for the work of the ministry. In the same way, the Holy Spirit still speaks to us today, to individuals, to families, and to the church.
The problem is not that the Holy Spirit has stopped speaking, but that many of us have stopped listening.
Who Is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is one of the three persons in the Godhead — the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. He has been in existence from the very beginning of creation. In Genesis 1:2, we read:
“And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
This shows us that the Holy Spirit is not a force or wind, but a divine person with a mind, will, and emotions. He speaks, He teaches, He convicts, and He guides.
He is the Spirit of the Almighty God, who penetrates the hearts of men, convicts them of sin, and draws them into repentance.
The Holy Spirit Speaks the Mind of God
In John 16:13, Jesus said:
“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.”
This means that the Holy Spirit reveals the will and mind of God to believers. He will never lead anyone to do what brings shame to God’s kingdom. Instead, He directs, warns, comforts, and instructs us in righteousness. A life truly guided by the
Holy Spirit is obvious, you see it in the person’s behavior, humility, and obedience to God.
The Holy Spirit is not silent or inactive. He works powerfully in and through believers in various ways:
1. He Teaches
2. He Convicts
3. He Empowers
4. He Gives Gifts
The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to believers for the building up of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:4–11). You can even ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your spiritual gifts to you, or to bless you with a specific gift that will help you serve God better.
Conclusion
Beloved, the Holy Spirit is still speaking today. He speaks to individuals, He speaks to the church, and He speaks through the Word. The question is: Are you listening?
Without the Holy Spirit, there will be struggle, confusion, and chaos—even in the church. But when we yield ourselves to Him, everything becomes aligned with the will of God. Let us therefore open our hearts, listen, and walk in obedience to His voice.
