I read here on Facebook that in 1995, twin sisters Brielle and Kyrie Jackson were prematurely born in Massachusetts, 12 weeks too early to their EDD. They were so "chunkuli", that each one of them was weighing just around two pounds (approx. 0.91 kg). Because they were so fragile, doctors placed them in SEPARATE incubators.
About three weeks after their birth, Brielle’s condition suddenly got worse. Her heart was racing, she was struggling to breathe, and her skin turned blue. The doctors and nurses tried everything they could, but nothing helped. It looked like she wasn’t going to make it.
Then, one of the nurses named Gale Kasparian surmount courage and did something unusual. She gently placed both babies in the SAME incubator, even though it was against the hospital rules. She just felt it was the right thing to do.
The moment the twins were reunited, something amazing happened. Kyrie, who was stronger, reached out and hugged her sister. Immediately, Brielle’s breathing began to steady, her heart rate slowed down, and her color returned. That simple act of closeness saved her life.
The story concluded that that very moment touched the hearts of many and led to changes in how premature babies are been cared by showing that human touch, love, and closeness can sometimes do what machines cannot.
A lot of thoughts and biblical passages flooded my mind. One of them is Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 that says, "Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”
Just like Kyrie’s hug helped Brielle, God created us for connection, support, and love. Even in our weakest moments, the power of love and presence can bring healing just as Christ’s love brings life to us. That's why we thrive when we care for one another. Remember, small acts of kindness like a hug, a prayer, or a listening ear can make eternal impact. Therefore, may we be intentional this year to reach out, stay close, and let someone feel the love of God through us.
