Topic: There’s Wisdom in Knowing Christ as the Word
Beloved, there is deep wisdom in knowing Christ as the Word. Scripture tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” When we know Christ as the Word, we are connected to the very wisdom and essence of God Himself. Anyone who truly knows Christ in this way becomes a person who fears God, a person who walks with understanding and divine direction. Not everyone has this privilege, but we who have been given this revelation must continually thank and praise God for it.
In our text, we see Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, observing the heavy burden Moses carried. Out of godly wisdom, he offered counsel: “Appoint men who fear God, trustworthy men, men who hate dishonest gain.” Jethro understood that leadership among God’s people requires character, not just ability.
This same principle appears again in the New Testament. Paul gave the church similar instructions when choosing elders, men who fear God, who are faithful to their wives, who lead well in their homes, whose children are well-behaved, and who have integrity.
Today, as we elect elders who will lead the affairs of the church for the next four years, these same qualities must guide us. We must choose men who fear God, who are trustworthy, born again, communicant members, not associated with secret cults, and grounded in basic Christian theology. These are the men who can carry God’s work faithfully.
In conclusion, if we lack the fear of God, nothing we do can truly succeed. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Therefore, let us walk wisely, fear the Lord in all our dealings, and trust that He will see us through.
